Obituary for Eleanor W. Legg (Williams)

Eleanor W. (Williams) Legg, 94, of Worcester and formerly of Spencer, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, in the comfort of her daughter’s home in South Carolina on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. She was the devoted and loving wife of the late Rev. Willard A. Legg, who predeceased her in 2007.

She leaves her children: David Connelly Legg and his wife, Kathleen, of Auburn, MA, Barbara Jean Rudik and her husband, Michael, of Piedmont, SC, and Judith A. Tatro and her wife, Jacqueline Robinson, of Worcester, MA; her grandchildren, Amanda Jean West and her husband, Clay, of Piedmont, SC, Patrick A. Tatro and his wife, Laura, of Spencer, MA, Daniel C. Legg, of Worcester, MA, Brian C. Legg, of Holyoke, MA, Martin C. Legg and his wife, Colette, of Freeport, ME, and David Ballan, of Hamburg, IA, and eight great-grandchildren, to whom she was lovingly known as “Mema”; her sister, Marjorie (Williams) Pratt, of Worcester, MA; as well as many nieces and nephews, who knew her as “Auntie El.” Along with her beloved husband, Eleanor was predeceased by her parents: Erven A. Williams and Sarah (Fellows) Williams.

She was born, raised, and educated in Worcester, graduating from Commerce High School. On September 9, 1950, Eleanor married the love of her life and the pair settled in Spencer to start their family. She began her career of 37 years at Paul Revere Insurance Company in Worcester, as Office Manager, from which she retired in 1991. Eleanor also worked as a clerk in the Fair Department Store and White’s Department Store.

She was a woman of deep faith and always remained involved at both Spencer Methodist and Wesley Methodist Churches, singing in the choirs, and assisting with food drives and other events.

Eleanor loved nature and gardening, especially her irises, the smell of lilacs, and bird-watching (from afar, of course). For 55 years, she enjoyed living in an antique farmhouse in Spencer, fixing and mending where needed. Eleanor loved travelling, especially road trips with Bill by her side.

She was known for being a devoted Boston Red Sox fan, being very thrifty and loved thrift stores, and being a Jig Saw Puzzle devotee. Above all, though, spending time with her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the most to her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Worcester County Food Bank, c/o Communications & Development Department, 474 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 (foodbank.org/donate/).

A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, June 19th, 2021, in Section 26 of Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster Street, Worcester, MA. The Britton-Wallace Funeral Home is honored to be assisting in arrangements.
