Obituary for Edward A House Jr.

Edward A  House Jr.
Edward A. House, Jr., 94, of Shrewsbury and former longtime resident of Rochester, New York died peacefully at his home with his family at his side. He was the husband of Barbara R. (Rice) House.

Son of the late Clara B. (Schweigert) and Edward A. House Sr., Edward was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Bennett High School in 1941 where he lettered in football and baseball. Ed received his Business Degree from the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. While in Illinois, he played hockey for the Niagara Frontier Hockey League where he won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1947. He worked for Atlantic Richfield for 30 years. He subsequently worked for CIBRO Petroleum and later consulted to Gorman Group of Albany, NY.

Edward served in the United States Army during World War II and continued to serve until he retired as a First Lieutenant in the 225 Ordinance Battalion, Medium Maintenance Company in Okinawa in 1946.

Ed was well known for his love and contribution to sports. Ed, along with Sam Toth, were instrumental in bringing the Rochester Americans to the American Hockey League in 1955. He was also the player/coach of the Rochester Packers, an amateur team that was the forerunner of the Americans in the early 1950s. Ed was a referee and linesman in the AHL for 12 seasons and was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in 2003. Ed was also instrumental in forming youth hockey leagues in the Rochester area where he developed the Junior Hockey Program, coached many youth teams and ran a hockey camp for several years. When he wasn’t on the ice, he spent many winters playing golf in Naples, FL.

Besides his wife and forever love, Barbara, Edward is also survived by his children, David House and his wife Cynthia of Westborough, MA, Edward House III and his wife Karen of Schenectady, NY, grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, David, Christopher, and Jessalyn, great grandchildren, Steele and Lincoln, his daughter-in-law Patricia House of New Jersey, his sister-in-law Nancy Hunt of Buffalo, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his son Stephen House.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday September 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Chapel at Southgate, 30 South Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in the Quaker Cemetery, 729 Quaker Road,Scottsville, NY on September 24,2018 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers donations in Edwards name may be made to the “Residents Appreciation Fund” at 30 Julio Dr. Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
