Obituary for Charles M Dumphy

Charles M Dumphy
Charles “Charlie” M. Dumphy, 78, of Worcester died Saturday July 28, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

Charlie was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Thomas R. and Ora (Burpee) Dumphy. He graduated from St. Paul’s Cathedral High School 1957 and enlisted into the United States Air Force upon graduation but was granted an Honorable Discharge for medical reasons. Following his service to the country, he enrolled in Elizabeth A. Ollis School of Beauty Culture in 1957 and received his degree in Hairdressing and Cosmetology in 1958.

This was the beginning of a long career in the Beauty Industry. Charlie joined his sister Jo Ann as a Hairdresser at her salon Jo Ann’s Beauty Salon on Cambridge St in Worcester. Then continued to work as a truck driver at Nabhan Beauty Supply before moving onto Hair-Lines in Shrewsbury in 1987 until his retirement in 2010. He also found time to work for his son-in-law’s company Cribill’s Catering for 20 years. Charlie was a proud foster parent opening his heart and home to so many children for twenty years.

Charlie loved to go to yard sales and was a collector of “good stuff” lots of “good stuff.” He also had a passion for antique cars and owned many Chevy Convertibles and Impala’s over the years. He would drive around with his roof down and his Cowboy hat on, his boots and dressed in his Western attire. But most of all, Charlie loved being involved in his grandchildren’s activities. He would attend any athletic event or dance recital that any of his beloved grandchildren were participating in.

Charlie is survived by his daughter Christine Coakley and her husband Bill from Charlton, sons Brian of Worcester, Sean from Grafton, Kevin and his wife Tami of Worcester, James of Barre, Steven and wife Holly of Riverview, Florida, Scott Downing and his wife Deena of Oxford and Ron Anish and his wife Beth of Auburn. He leaves his grandchildren Kelly Adamshick and her husband Stephen, Patrick Coakley, William, Thomas, Paige, Tanner, Matthew, Ryan and Savannah Dumphy, Tyler, Jake and Brooklynn Downing and Maura and Brendan Anish. Also survived by his brother Leo Dumphy of N.C. and his twin sister Carol Cote of Worcester several nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law’s Vicki and Pat. He is predeceased by his parents and his siblings Raymond, Thomas, JoAnn, Francis, Richard, Joseph, James, John, Ralph and Mary.

The Dumphy family wishes to thank the physicians and nurses of the 7ICU and 6East at the UMASS Memorial Medical Center-University Campus for all their compassion during Charlie’s illness.
