William D "Bill" Hughes
William D. “Bill” Hughes, 70, of Rindge, New Hampshire, formerly of Monroe, CT, died at home on July 13th of cancer.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife Barbara (Meehan) Hughes, his daughter Erin and husband Dana Canzano of Shrewsbury, MA, son Bill and wife Kerin Hughes of Mt. Holly, NC, and son Patrick Hughes of Philadelphia, PA. He leaves five grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Maureen Martinelli of Stratford, CT; and brothers Tom (Bev) of Trumbull, CT; Rory of Vienna, West Virginia, and Dermot (Pam) of N. Chittenden, VT. He also leaves many cousins and nieces and nephews.

Born on November 9, 1946, in Bridgeport, CT, to William and Mary (McDonald) Hughes, Bill graduated from Notre Dame HS. He spent over 30 years in law enforcement, first as an officer for the Monroe Police Department, and then as an Inspector for the Fairfield State’s Attorney’s office. He took early retirement in 2003 and designed and built his dream log home in NH.

During the 1980s, Bill was very involved in the Gaelic-American Club, serving as President as it transitioned from Black Rock to Fairfield. He and Barb hosted children from Northern Ireland and attended feises and ceilis. An accordion player, Bill filled his home with Irish music.

Bill is best known for his love of family. He is fondly remembered for his parties, from Christmas Eve bashes to New Year’s Eve celebrations to summer picnics at the lake. He prepared outstanding meals for every occasion, and lavishly entertained his guests with his Irish music and banter. He and Barb especially enjoyed traveling to visit their family and friends, to listen to their son Patrick play his trumpet, and to watch their grandchildren’s’ plays and sporting events.

A visitation period with Bills’ family will be on Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 9:00-9:45 am in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main St, Shrewsbury.
